Alykes is one of the most beautiful places in Thassos island. It is a small peninsula that forms two beautiful beaches, ideal for swimming and fishing. Crystal emerald-turquoise waters, pines and olives trees create a unique landscape. At the edge of the sandy beach there are small taverns where the traveler can taste fresh fish, any kind of seafood, well-cooked Greek cuisine.
Alykes have a rich ancient history and this is evidenced by the archaeological finds from the 7th century BC. The Alykes peninsula is considered to be the oldest quarry in Thassos. Since that time marble were extracted from Alykes. The quarry was exactly near to the sea so it was easy to transport the marble. Today, the traveler can see the ancient signs of the workmanship tools on the marble rock.
The marble of Thassos is world-famous for its especial whiteness, so the large quarries that are currently operating in Thassos, export the marble to all parts of the world. For example, most of Mecca’s square is covered with marble of Thassos.
Greek marble is totally connected with Greek culture. Thousands of art works, statues, temples, among which the world famous Parthenon in Athens, created from the marble of Thassos, adorn the museums of the western world today.
